Irrigation Pumps
Ending hunger, increasing incomes.
80% of the poor in Sub-Saharan Africa are rural farmers. And 75% of all hungry children in Africa live in farming households.
But the social enterprise, Kickstart has developed an innovative solution. Kickstart has developed an affordable irrigation pump, capable of increasing a farmers income 1,000% (yes, 1,000)!
About Kickstart: We’re proud to partner with the social enterprise, Kickstart. Working in Kenya since 1991, Kickstart’s goal is to develop, launch and promote simple money-making tools poor entrepreneurs use to create their own profitable businesses. In doing so, Kickstart developed, “The MoneyMaker, a line of affordable irrigation pumps that turn subsistent farmers into profitable entrepreneurs.
Kickstart has sold 174,610 pumps across Africa and 63,505 pumps in Kenya - moving over half a million people out of poverty.
Without an irrigation pump, rural farmers engage in “bucket farming, spending hours bending over their crops pouring water out of a heavy bucket. It’s tedious, time-consuming, and nearly impossible to grow more than a small plot.
The MoneyMaker pumps can increase harvests by 3-4 times per year, and can irrigate up to 2 acres of land per day. We like it because it’s run as a business, creating a sustainable supply chain and treating the poor as consumers, rather than charity.
It’s the best invention we’ve seen to alleviate poverty and end hunger.
