Four things in are needed for good natural resource management: governance, management, science, and technology. What really interests me is how the later two, scientific knowledge and evolving technology, provides a foundation for governance and management that leads to conservation of resources, equity and sustainable development.

Unfortunately most environmental management decisions are based on politics, politics of ownership, access, extraction and exploitation, and rents.

My work has always been to show that sustainable resource management needs to be based on science and human rights rather than politics and power.
