I’ve been an IT professional for 14 years now. What have all these years taught me? IT implementation is hard.
I’ve just finished my master’s degrees at Carnegie Mellon and ITESM. This program left me with a broader vision of IT. I no longer see IT as a commodity and as something that blindly serves the business. IT needs to be an ally to the business and a driver for change.
The problem we IT people have is that we don’t like to get close to the business. We want our company to tell us what they need, how much they’re willing for pay for it and how much time we have to deliver it. I want to change that. I want to get closer to the business, understand its real needs and then deliver technology where it can help the most.
There are probably thousands of IT development firms in Mexico. I wonder how many fulfill the "strategic ally” role they present themselves as.
That’s why I decided to start a new phase in my career as a Strategic IT Consultant. I want to help the business to identify the real drivers that push for digital transformation. I want to deliver a a solution that goes beyond ROI and truly delivers measurable benefits for the company.
I also have a strong belief that technology is greatly needed on social-driven companies in Mexico. There are many federal programs to help people in my country. Technology can help in targeting these programs to where they’re really needed. It’s time to empower small and medium businesses and NPOs to help more people.
