Manuel Puppis is a full professor in media systems and media structures at the Department of Communication and Media Research DCM, University of Fribourg. He currently serves as member of the extra-parliamentary Federal Media Commission (FMEC). From 2012-2016 he was chair of ECREA's "Communication Law and Policy" Section.

Puppis holds a PhD in Communication Science and an M.A. in Communication Science (major subject), Political Science and Economic and Social History (minor subjects) from the University of Zurich. His research interests include media policy, media regulation and media governance, media economics, media organizations and journalism, media change and digitization, the Swiss media system, and international comparisons of media systems and media policy.

Prior to his current position he was both a senior research and teaching associate at the University of Zurich's Institute of Mass Communication and Media Research, and a post-doctoral researcher within the National Center of Competence in Research "Challenges to Democracy in the 21st Century", a multi-disciplinary research program launched by the Swiss National Science Foundation.

During spring term 2018, Puppis was a visiting scholar at the Department of Media, Culture, and Communication, Steinhardt School, New York University. For fall term 2012 Puppis was appointed as a Visiting Resident Scholar at the Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia/USA. Before, he was a visiting scholar at the Hans-Bredow-Institute for Media Research at the University of Hamburg/Germany and at the Centre for Global Communication Studies, Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia/USA.
