Hey there, I’m Marcella. I’m a teacher living in Toronto. I am a fan of travel, fitness, and food. I’m also interested in music and education.

I graduated from teacher’s college just over a year ago. Given the difficult times in obtaining a position in the education system, I recently became a supply teacher and educational assistant with two separate boards. I enrolled myself in IICTI to advance/broaden my technology skills as a teacher for the betterment of student learning.

Prior to becoming a teacher, I had a career in the legal industry where I learned quite a bit about myself while being around many uninspiring lawyers. I had learned that teaching, as a rewarding career in itself, was always a chord that struck my heart. After several years in the legal industry, it was then that I decided to obtain my undergraduate and teaching degrees in pursue of my goal in becoming a teacher.

As I continue to work part-time in the legal industry, I see first hand the importance of 21 century learning. In the corporate/office world, much stress is on the ability to use technology. It seems there is an ongoing expectation within the corporate world to meet the demands of the evolving world of technology. I find that although technology is an important asset/requirement needed to be a successful individual in the working world, it is also important to be competent in areas outside of technology.

Through my teaching and educational assistant experiences I have noticed a large gap between schools, boards, and classrooms incorporating technology. It seems not everyone is on board. Some boards seem to simply not have the funding to fully support the 21 century learner, and it seems schools in higher income communities have more funding for technology than others. I am not quite sure as to the reasoning behind the misconnection but I am eager to change that and hope that the gap can and will be addressed.

I look forward to and am excited to see myself evolve throughout this course.
