Marco was born in Colombia where he graduated with a Bachelor in Nutrition and Dietetics, later he got his Master in Public Health (maternal and child health) at Universidad de Antioquia.

In the United States he completed his Master of Science in Training and Development at University of St Francis in Joliet, Illinois.

Marco worked for several years as rural nutritionist and dietitian with the Instituto Colombiano de Bienestar Familiar (National Institute of Family Welfare of Colombia) in the isolated regions of Yolombo in the state of Antioquia (Departamento de Antioquia).

With United Nations Volunteers Marco went to Honduras working for 6 years in the areas of nutrition and health education for vulnerable groups (pregnant, nursing women and children under 5 years old) and promotion of productive activities at family level.

In 1991 Marco went to Equatorial Guinea, Angola, Sudan and Somalia with different international organizations like International Medical Corps, CARE and World Vision International training community health workers and midwives.

Suffered a terrorist attack in Baidoa, Somalia, February 2nd, 1994.

Applied a Freirian praxis - Paulo Freire--approach to community empowerment, community mobilization, organization and participatory education.
