Teacher in British Columbia, Canada

Hello, I’m Emily. I’m a teacher living in British Columbia, Canada. I am a fan of travel, food, and coffee. My most recent big trip involved Greece and Egypt and it was incredible! I’m also interested in yoga and football (the New York Giants!)

I'm currently finishing up my third year of teaching in Langley BC. I am Secondary English and Social Studies teacher. This past year I taught Humanities 8, English 10, 20th Century World History and Social Studies 10. I have also taught some ELL courses - English 10 ELL and Social Studies 10 ELL.

I decided I wanted to be an English teacher when I was in grade 10 English and read To Kill a Mockingbird for the first time. This was the moment I fell in love with English, and this book is still my all time favourite. I absolutely love teaching English because I get to learn so much about my students through each and every activity that is completed. I also love the freedom of being able to integrate creative activities throughout the course and being able to feed off of what my students are interested in.

Throughout this course I hope to gain more teaching strategies and resources for teaching English, especially at the grade 8 level. Specifically, I want to work on how to get kids excited about reading. My grade 8s really struggled with independent reading and comprehension this past year. I want them to enjoy reading and not see it as a chore. In a world where kids can read short Instagram posts or watch quick videos on snap chat, I find sustained tasks, like reading, can be very challenging for them.

I look forward to working with all of you!

Thanks for reading.

Emily
