Marco Spagnoli is an Italian journalist, film and television critic, writer, and documentary director whose work bridges cultural analysis and cinematic storytelling.
He holds a Master’s Degree in Philosophy with a focus on the History of Social and Political Institutions, a background that informs his rigorous and humanistic approach to the audiovisual world.
He serves as Artistic Director of the Italian Global Series Festival and as Deputy Director and Head of the Doc & Factual Division at MIA Market Italy, where he plays a key role in shaping the country’s most influential industry platform for documentary and factual content. Over the years, he has collaborated with major film and television events across Italy, contributing to their editorial vision and international outreach.
As a writer and creator, Spagnoli has authored several acclaimed podcasts, including Interno Giorno (Amazon Audible), a journey through Italian cinema; Volare! (Rai Radio 3), chronicling the extraordinary history of Italian space exploration; and Sophia Loren – Voice of a Diva, a portrait of Italy’s most iconic actress.
His work as a documentary filmmaker has earned him three nominations for the David di Donatello Awards and two Silver Ribbons, notably for his films on cinema history and for La Voce del Padrone, dedicated to Franco Battiato. Many of his documentaries have been selected and awarded at international festivals.
Spagnoli is Editor-in-Chief of Il Giornale dello Spettacolo, one of Italy’s most respected entertainment trade publications.
He teaches Documentary at the Writing Master of Luiss Business School in Rome and is the author of a popular online course for Domestika.
He is a member of FIPRESCI, the Italian Film Academy – David di Donatello, the European Film Academy, and serves as a Golden Globe voter.
He's a father of 4: Claudio, Antonio, Leone e Alice (in order of appearance).
Spagnoli is a vegetarian.
