Marcus Carey
I’m Marcus, a sub-par comedian, self-deprecator, hip-hop head/R&B body, investor, tech enthusiast, and student of all-things-life.
As is the case for most of us, my history continues to inform my perspective. Born in 1991 to Kimberly and Marvin Carey, I was raised in Detroit, MI with my older sister, Marquelle, in a modest three-bedroom bungalow on 7 Mile and John C. Lodge Freeway. Following the untimely death of my father only 4 months after birth, my mother cultivated an education-first environment for my sister and I with the help of my step-father, Kevin Arnold.
Passion and goals defined my upbringing from a very early age. With enthusiasm also came a keen ability to identify what didn’t work for me – that list included: karate, basketball, gymnastics, baseball, handwriting skills, etc. However, a few things stuck on the list and remain important parts of my pursuit. For example, faithfully watching NBC’s ‘The Apprentice’ at 13 years old bred passion for entrepreneurship and real estate development. Similarly, securing my first job as a golf caddy at age 12 bred a personal work ethic and deep love for the sport. (FILL IN)
I graduated from Renaissance High School on Detroit’s west side and finished my undergraduate degree in Finance at Howard University in Washington, DC. To date, my work as a University Trustee for Howard, working on service and engagement strategy, has been my most meaningful work. I am currently a private equity investor with CCMP Capital, spending most of my days assessing value propositions for healthcare, industrial and consumer retail businesses in search of investment partners.
During my spare time living in New York City, I’m normally laughing, traveling, cooking, and planning.
