Marc Zavarella

Marc Zavarella served in the United States Army for more than three years as a member of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, the subject of the Oscar-nominated documentary film Restrepo. Stationed in Vicenza, Italy, Marc Zavarella completed a deployment to Afghanistan in the spring of 2013 and earned recognition for serving with distinction. While in Afghanistan, he served in several capacities, including as a rifleman, machine gunner, and member of an intelligence support team. He conducted patrols, provided security, and aided the local populous. He is a member of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Marc Zavarella graduated from the University of New York at Oswego with a bachelor’s degree in adolescent education. While finishing his degree, he volunteered nearly 350 hours at Oswego Hospital. He also volunteered at the Hall Newman Center, a Catholic ministry on the university’s campus. Encouraged by his older brother, a chief resident neurosurgeon in New York City, Marc Zavarella intends to complete the required coursework at Columbia University to enter medical school and become a doctor.
