Marina Choi
Artist, Designer, and Photographer in Sydney, Australia
Hey, I’m Marina. I’m an artist living in Sydney, Australia. I am a fan of design, entrepreneurship, and travel. I’m also interested in innovation and outdoors. You can hire me with a click on the button above.
I wasn’t always in Design. Initially, I began my career in Accounting at a Big 4 firm after completing a Bachelor of Commerce at UNSW. After a couple of years, I came to realise that I had pushed out the creative individual that I once was.
Armed with curiosity and a determination to develop my design skills, I found myself in a Communication Design course at Billy Blue in 2016 and I felt more in tune with myself than any other year, surrounded by like-minded people – my kind of people – and building version 2.0 of myself.
It all began in the hours from 7pm – 12am, during my down time from corporate work life. I enjoyed doodling with micron or felt-tip pen and made it a creative mental exercise to play ‘Mr. Squiggle’ just by scribbling some lines and dots and progressively adding more detail to become a mini illustration. From there, I developed an interest in vector illustrations and digitalising my work.
On weekends, besides playing catch up with friends, I enjoy a hit of tennis, going on short hikes around Sydney, not just for the ‘Gram but to practice photography and to soak in as much sunshine and good vibes as possible. Like a true Australian, I love all things summer including the beach, ice-cream and the smell of coconut. To be honest, I would much rather swelter in the heat than suffer in cold weather!
I am particularly drawn to nature, botanicals, the ocean and, as hippy as it sounds, the energies I feel from the earth and people around me. You can probably gain a sense of that from my work.
The values I live by:
– Be open minded
– Be true to myself
– Celebrate often
– Collaborate
– Question everything
