Marine Stewardship Council
international non-profit in Australia & New Zealand
As one of our most prolonged sources of food in history, seafood has been an essential part of human development. However, the love of seafood and aquatic life has led to various problems within our society. This includes overfishing, the creation of sustainable seafood, and restoring the stock of fish to avoid the loss of seafood for future generations.
At the Marine Stewardship Council, we operate as a non-profit group that helps to educate, inform, and push for positive change within the fishing industry.
Our group has a simple mission: to ensure that overfishing becomes a problem of the past. We believe that it is possible to enjoy vast quantities of seafood for our populations without the overfishing problems we are facing today. Crucially, too, we believe that it is possible for seafood to be a more sustainable enterprise, avoiding the needless wastage that comes with the industry as of today.
We use a simple ‘blue fish tick’ program to help provide certification for fisheries that meet the standards we have set out. This certification program, we believe, can play a huge role in contributing positively to the health of our oceans.
By helping companies and consumers alike to recognise where they might be going wrong, we ensure that they can do more to improve themselves and, thus, their end results.
Sustainable fishing is not a pipedream – it is essential
Many believe that changes to the fishing industry that would benefit us all are simply not possible. However, our team has shown that with the right adjustment, fisheries can still thrive. They can do so whilst cutting away from the practices that have led to waste, poorer standards for seafood quality, and a lack of focus on sustainability.
If we continue as we are in the fishery industry, we could doom future generations to a world with limited seafood and poor aquatic conditions. It is our mission to help provide companies with the guidelines and support they need to change for the better. Through comprehensive study and understanding, we make sure that sustainable fishing no longer becomes a pipedream. Instead, we help companies to see that it only takes some considered adjustments to ensure that wastage becomes a problem of the past.
In short, we are here to help support and provide assistance to the various companies out there looking to change for the better. Together, we can make the seafood market more sustainable.
