Over the course of three decades of employment with the city of San Diego, CA, Bonita, California, resident Mario Sierra worked in eight different departments, holding leadership positions as a director in four of them. Most recently, he served as director of the environmental services department, where he oversaw 420 employees and an annual budget of $105 million, in addition to managing the operation of a municipal regional landfill, multiple closed landfills, and a program to dispose of hazardous household materials. Mario X. Sierra previously directed departments such as the transportation department and the general services department.

In recognition of his work for the city, Mr. Sierra was named the City of San Diego Project Manager of the Year in 1995. He earned a bachelor of science in applied mechanics and engineering sciences from the University of California, San Diego, while working as a tutor with the school’s Oasis Program. He also holds a master of arts in public administration from National University. Retired since 2019, Mario X. Sierra spends his time in Bonita, CA, where he enjoys gardening and working on home improvement projects.
