Marios Politis

Marios Politis is the Director of Mireille Gillings Neuroimaging Centre at the University of Exeter.
A former Professor of Neurology and Neuroimaging at King’s College London, he served as Deputy Head between 2016 and 2017, and as Head of the Neurology Unit between 2018 and 2019. During the years 2013 to 2018, he played an instrumental role in developing changes in the Neurology Firm and MSc Clinical Neuroscience; this work resulted in the receipt of several awards, as well as widespread praise regarding the excellence of his delivery of education to undergraduate and postgraduate medical and non-medical students.
In 2019, following a substantial investment, Marios and the Neurodegeneration Imaging Group (NIG), which he conceived and designed in 2012, moved to the University of Exeter, with sites at both Exeter and London. The headquarters of NIG are based at the Translation and Innovation Hub, a state-of-the-art facility in London. Marios was appointed Director of the Mireille Gillings Neuroimaging Centre in 2020.
Marios has raised over £60 million for research into neurodegenerative conditions including Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Disease and other less-common conditions, and remains in active collaboration with many government, philanthropic, commercial and non-commercial industrial partners. He has trained more than 120 clinical and non-clinical fellows, research assistants and research associates, and undergraduate and postgraduate students at NIG.
Marios is also a scientific advisor to bodies including the Medical Research Council (MRC) UK, the Research Grants Council (RGC) in Hong Kong, the Israel Science Foundation, the Swiss National Science Foundation, the National Research Foundation (NRF) in Korea, and the Michael J Fox Foundation (MJFF) for Parkinson’s Research.
