Marissa Street

I grew up Jewish in the South (talk about conflicting cultural heritage). I was in the first graduating class of the American Hebrew Academy, the only non-denominational Jewish prep school in North America. I also attended the Alexander Muss High School in Israel program through AHA and spent 3 awesome months in a vibrant country. In fact, it was my exposure to the notion of Tikkun Olam (Healing the World) that instilled the ultimate desire to make a positive difference in the world.

After earning a bachelor's degree in Sociology and Anthropology at Hendrix Collegeand graduating into a recession, I spent a few years gaining valuable service industry experience. Relocating to Tampa, FL to attend the University of South Florida gave me the opportunity to leave the food service industry and enter the community service industry. As a physician referral and community education representative for several hospitals across the country I helped people find doctors that aren't listed in the phone book and register them for various health screenings, health seminars, and free hospital swag. I was also responsible for setting up evaluations for potential hospice patients.I am currently a patient care coordinator for a genetic counseling company.

From December 26 through January 9th I took a crew down to Ecuador and the Huaorani community of Bameno to film a commercial for their tourism business. By collaborating with community leaders our goal is to produce a film that entices people to visit not only the beautiful Amazonian jungle but also one of the vibrant cultures that lives there.

My primary research interest lie in filming discursive processes, female oppression, cultural and enviornmental activisim, and First Nation movements across the Americas.
