I write about American landscape, and am completing a book that explores how urban memorials and public art reveal changing understandings of place and community identity in the twentieth century, refracted through the lens of the Cleveland Cultural Gardens and various international monuments. I previously wrote about firemen and fire insurance Eating Smoke: Fire in Urban America, 1800-1950.
I Direct Public History at Arizona State University, where we're building a public history innovation lab. Prior to ASU, I founded and co-directed the Center for Public History + Digital Humanities at Cleveland State University. I am especially interested in the dynamism at the intersection of public history and digital humanities, especially the possibilities of curating cities as museums. I have created a host of digital projects, most in conjunction with the community, including the smartphone app Cleveland Historical and a framework for mobile publishing, Curatescape.
