As I've grown older I've grown to understand what Kenneth Koch meant. Not only does it take a village to raise a child; it takes a village to have a rewarding career. I love my fellow Chicago area villagers. I'm also blessed with co-workers, customers and friends around the country and world. Hipsters would call this my tribe; but, I don't like visualizing them in loin cloths.

Below are some quick facts about my career and passions. There are, of course, multiple ways to connect with me. I invite you to do so. ~Mark

Venture Lending - Since 1997 I have worked with the same core group of professionals at five firms. I carry responsibility for underwriting and closing all transactions and for the long-term management of the portfolio of loans and equity positions. Over 17 years I have managed the credit, documentation and portfolio management team that has made 485 investments totaling $1.2B of venture loans.

Successful investments include: Google, Boingo Wireless, StubHub, ComScore, UPromise, A123 Systems,, SnapFish, EnerNOC, and Omeros Pharmaceuticals. There's also a long list of not so successful deals, but let's not go there.

Microenterprise Lending - For 9 years I had the privilege of doing microenterprise development lending with Opportunity International and South Shore Bank.

I'm crazy interested in how thoughtful investing can change the world for better. At I blog and podcast about impact investing and venture capital.

Kid Stuff - I love watching my three boys do sports, music, art, theater, video games, etc. etc. Coaching has taught me practical leadership skills that apply not just with elementary age boys, but also with their parents. Watching them reminds me how important practice, discipline and fun are.

Avid Runner - At age 40 I started running so that I could keep up with my kids. I'm now hooked for life and have completed the Chicago and New York marathons, three half marathons and numerous 5, 10 and 15K races.

Gadget Guy - As an early adopter, I've owned numerous gadgets. Some successful; others not so much. I miss my Atari computer.

Chicago Barnabas - This great group of business people work together to help Christian ministries expand their impact.
