In preparation for a career in social work, Marla Harding received an associate’s degree in sociology and a special certificate in women’s studies from Diablo Valley College. She then attended California State University, Hayward, and graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a minor in English. A member of the Social Worker Association chapters in California and Washington, Marla Harding remains informed on developments in her field by reading Psychology Today and taking continuing education courses on such subjects as the differentiation between physical and sexual abuse.

During her tenure as a State of Washington social worker, Ms. Harding performed investigations and provided courtroom testimony for suspected cases of child abuse and neglect. She examined homes under question, interviewed children and collateral sources, and gathered supporting documentation from professional parties ranging from psychiatrists to drug screening facilities. Also responsible for assisting families with limited resources, she distributed vouchers for basic necessities, such as beds and clothing, and directed clients to organizations where they could obtain meals and school materials.

More recently, Ms. Harding worked as an intake coordinator for Shelter, Inc., in Martinez, California. In this role, she conducted the interview and application process for families seeking to qualify for emergency financial and housing aid.

Marla Harding continues to support Shelter, Inc., and also contributes to the Boys & Girls Club. Among her pastimes, she enjoys visiting lesser-known eateries and experimenting to recreate their dishes at home.
