Marlene Murphy
Journalist in Ontario, Canada
I'm a broadcast journalist with experience working in radio and television at the national level.
I'm interested in learning more about how the Internet is changing the way news is gathered and delivered, and the impact that's having on legacy media outlets. I have done research on how broadcast news outlets are creating social media policies for individuals working in their newsrooms.
I am also interested in gathering more information about the decreasing number of positions in traditional newsrooms, and how that is affecting job prospects for young journalists entering the profession. My research in this area looked at a history of internships at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
I am currently looking into efforts to avoid an "unnewsed" segment of the population, who don't have the financial resources to pay for subscriptions or Internet access. This research will look at what role public libraries can play in helping to develop media literacy and access to resources, as well as work being done by libraries in conjunction with established news journalism producers.
