Yoga Instructor in United Kingdom
Hello! I'm Marlie, Certified Yoga Instructor (200 hour Hatha Teacher Training recognised by the Yoga Alliance, eight month intensive, 2011-12) with over 10+ years yoga teaching experience across Canada and the United Kingdom, including Hot Yoga, Hatha, Vinyasa, Ashtanga, Yin, Restorative, Vinyasa Yin, Iyengar and Children’s Yoga style classes.
I began my yoga journey in the late nineties, studying and practicing in person with renowned Iyengar yoga instructor Burt Peeters, alongside episodes of Lilias, Yoga and You (PBS television programme), all fuelled by an interest in sixties counterculture, art, music, and alternative health. After I completed my initial training, I took part in the Karma Yoga program at Hollyhock - Cortes Island Retreat and Learning Centre - located in the remote wilderness of British Columbia - an experience immersed in community, selfless service, wellness, yoga and meditation retreats (and where I had the honour of making Gabor Maté his first raw vegan dessert…he loved it!)
I have been fortunate to continue my studies and deepen my practice globally at Kripalu Centre for Yoga and Health, Hollyhock, Indaba Yoga and the Iyengar Yoga Institute in London. I also have a decade+ experience as a university lecturer, teaching and mentoring undergraduate students, and am currently completing my PhD. Yoga is for everyone, and there is something for everyone in yoga.
In my teaching I offer a compassionate approach to cultivating concentration and awareness to help guide you through your practice: to experience the benefits of practicing postures (asana), breath work (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana) integrated into a balanced system for health and wellness in everyday modern life; and how teachings from the eight limbs of yoga philosophy can be experienced in action, both in yogasana practice and out in the world (ahimsa, seva). The hot yoga classes I teach incorporate modern postural yoga: asana sequencing with an emphasis on alignment, synced with Vinyasa movement and the breath, for all levels.
A life-long learner, my training and study is ongoing (next up: Stewart Gilchrist’s workshop, Indaba, Winter 2024). Every day's another dawning to learn and try something new, to liberate mind and body. We look after ourselves to help others. I welcome you to find union, transformation and personal freedom in your practice
