Marquis Caines
Your Favorite Engineer, Producer/Song-writer
Hello everyone. My name is Marquis Caines and I am currently a student at Full Sail University enrolled in the Recording Arts Bachelor’s Degree program. In 2013 I migrated from the Island of Bermuda to Winter Park, Florida to pursue my passion. It has always been a goal of mine to become an Audio Engineer. In between school, I am collaborating with multiple artists and working on my own personal projects.
I am very passionate about music. I love making music for artists as well as working with them to achieve their ideal sound or feeling of the song on which we are working. My workflow is unique within its own right. Instead of making tracks for the artist ahead of time, I invite them over and I make the backing track on the spot with them. It allows for the artist to be more involved in the entire music making process. I work based on the feeling and emotion that the artist would like to convey to their target audience. Before we get to work I ask them four to five questions:
· Do you have any ideas on what the track should sound like?
· Do you have a hook, chorus or verse already written?
· Do you have a song that you like that we can reference from?
· Who is your target audience?
· What is the emotion that you are trying to convey?
These five questions start the creative process and also keep the artist happy and feel involved. This creative process allows for me as the producer and the artist to communicate and provide feedback and opinions on the direction of the track.
Not everyone can work like this and not everyone I work with can use this format, but I feel this is one of the best ways to work with other people because both you and the artist are giving your opinions on what the finished product should sound like. After the backing track is created we immediately go into vocal tracking and begin creating their ideal song. Before they leave I give them a rough mix to listen to in their car on their phone which keeps them happy until the next time we have a session.
Thanks for visiting my page. Here you will be able to learn a little more about me, what I have accomplished/will accomplish, and why I am a strong proponent for this way of understanding music engineering.
