Marquis Cabrera is passionate about law, business and entrepreneurship. He believes these are mechanisms by which we can systematically innovate societies. Marquis is passionate about creating beauty with-in systems and developing technologies for good.
Early in his career, Marquis conceptualized and engineered a computer program that produced guest and student IDs that scanned to increase school district security for The Enlarged City School District of Middletown. Later, he was the first intern, law clerk for Massachusetts Super Lawyer, Krista Larsen and served as a judicial intern at both The Massachusetts Appeals and Supreme Judicial Courts. Marquis served as an inaugural intern in the White House Office of the Chief of Staff under Rahm Emanuel.
After working with City Year HQ, Marquis joined Wayfair, where he consulted in areas including corporate messaging, strategic partnerships, re-branding and brand recognition, sales and retail operations, and organizational strategy. He also worked for Wefunder to champion The Startup JOBS Act and build a platform for small businesses to have access to crowdinvestors. Marquis is an active business coach of an eco-fashion startup, Harper Lei, and a crowfunding startup for black entrepreneurs, blackstartup. He served on Philadelphia Mayor Nutter's Cities United Youth Summit Planning Committee. In 2013, he will publish, Foster Marque, a fiction book that provides a message to the world that we need to create more opportunities for disadvantaged youth to have a fighting chance in the world.
Middletown School District Superintendent invited him back to be the Commencement Speaker at the 2010 Middletown High School Graduation. Later, he was a plenary speaker at the 2011 Opportunity Nation Conference in New York City and received the only standing ovation among a list of socialites, like Mayor Bloomberg, Fareed Zakaria, and Serena Williams. He has been featured in Reuters, Her Campus, The Boston Globe, The Times-Herald Record, Let's Talk Magazine, Latina Lista, and numerous media outlets. Marquis was Microsoft YouthSpark Prize Winner and Star of The Week, a Case Foundation Finding Fearless Award Winner, a finalist for the Massachusetts Nonprofit Networks Excellence Award and received a Certificate of Recognition from Boston Mayor Thomas Menino.
Marquis loves extreme sports, indie rock music, and reading a lot about a lot and plans to stay young at heart in future.
