Martin Harssema, MD, laid the foundation for his successful career with a bachelor of arts in psychology from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, and a doctor of medicine from the University of Texas at Austin. Martin Harssema, MD, went on to complete a general surgery internship at the Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, and join the US Air Force as a flight surgeon at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base in Wayne County, North Carolina.

After serving several years as a general Air Force surgeon, Dr. Harssema returned to the academic environment to complete an anesthesiology residency through the University of Florida in Gainesville. Shortly after completing this residency, he earned certification through the American Board of Anesthesiology and went on to serve more than seven years as an US Air Force staff anesthesiologist.

When he is not working, Dr. Martin Harssema enjoys scuba diving, kayaking, paddle boarding, and snowboarding. He is also working toward his private pilot license.
