I am interested in the adjustments and adaptation of mitochondrial bioenergetics in response to physiological challenge and stress. My research initiated by identifying the evolution of uncoupling proteins (which reside in the mitochondrial inner membrane and modulate energy transduction). Recently, we started to apply our knowledge about principles of mitochondrial efficiency in translational biology to manipulate cellular energy metabolism and aim to identify therapeutic targets for obesity and diabetes.
