Marwa Zafarullah

Graduate Student, Researcher, and Public Speaker in Davis, California

Marwa Zafarullah is a Ph.D. candidate in Integrative Genetics and Genomics at the University of California, Davis USA. She earned her bachelor’s in Agricultural Sciences from the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad, Pakistan and graduated first in her class. After passing a competitive examination, she received a scholarship from the Agriculture Innovation Program of USAID to pursue her Master's in the States.

During her Master degree program, she worked in the laboratory of Dr. Luca Comai and investigated the evolutionary relationship between two centromere proteins CENH3 and CENPC in Arabidopsis thaliana. She graduated in June 2017 with Thesis titled “An Investigation of Functional Dependency of CENP-C and CENH3 in Arabidopsis thaliana”.

Currently, she is working in the lab of Dr. Flora Tassone at UC Davis Mind Institute and her work is focused on the development of the Biomarker for the Early Diagnosis and progression of Neurological Disorder called FXTAS. She is passionate about genetics and presented her work at various prestigious forums Nationally and Internationally.

Marwa’s experience in Diversity, Student issues, and Quality education. Previously, she served as Senior Vice President of “The Quiz Club” and “The Agrarian Society”, which is the biggest student body at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad. In Summer 2017 she held two student sessions in Pakistan regarding prospects of Agriculture and scholarship hunting that had been attended on average by 400 students.

She had been invited to talk about Science and Genetics, life at Graduate school and Diversity Issues. She organized 4th Annual UCD Integrative Genetics and Genomics Colloquium 2017 and 6th annual UCD Plant Science Symposium-17. She was a Graduate Student Panelist for International Graduate Student Orientation-17, Women of Color Graduate Panelist and served as Student Chair at Plant Biology Retreat. She was also one of the significant guest speakers at the Center for Advanced Studies Project Launching Ceremony in UC Davis.

Zafarullah has been a member of the Chancellor’s Graduate and Professional Student Advisory Board (CGPSA) since 2015 and currently serving on the Executive Council of Graduate Student Association 2017-2019. In appreciation of her services, she has been awarded the “Outstanding service award of a year” by Integrative Genetics and Genomics graduate group at UCDAVIS.
