Matt Kleinmann
Community Health Designer and Doctoral Student in Lawrence, Kansas
I am currently a doctoral student in architecture with a focus on public health and food access at the University of Kansas. I am also a co-director of Dotte Agency, a community design collaborative in Kansas City, KS.
I have a background in urban design, photography, and videography, and my work is focused on using community-based participatory research to help neighborhoods tell stories that promote greater access to health.
I believe that people should have the basic human right of living in a healthy neighborhood, and that architectural designers can use their skills to promote greater health outcomes for all.
Previous to my doctoral studies, I was an adjunct professor in architecture and urban design at KU. From 2011 - 2014, I worked for Helix Architecture + Design in Kansas City on adaptive reuse and campus master planning projects.
In 2014, I was the inaugural Community Engagement Research Fellow at the architecture firm of Eskew+Dumez+Ripple in New Orleans, Louisiana.
I also currently serve as a board member for the non-profit Historic Green, which uses sustainability to restore neighborhoods in Kansas City and the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans.
I earned an a Masters in Urban Design from the Sam Fox School of Design at Washington University in St. Louis, and a Masters in Architecture degree from the University of Kansas School of Architecture, Design and Planning, where I played for the 2008 NCAA National Championship Men's KU Basketball Team.
