Matt Warburton

Matt Warburton is the founder and co-principal of Emdoubleyu Design, a Vancouver-based design studio. Building on training in traditional typesetting at Typsettra and identity/communications design at Gottschalk + Ash, he moved west in 1989 where worked with Herrainco Design Associates before expanding Emdoubleyu Design to a full time operation in 1997. In September 2012 he joined the Communications & Marketing team at The University of British Columbia as a designer. In July 2014 he assumed the role of Design Manager.

He is a part-time instructor in the ECUAD/BCIT Design Essentials program, a member the GDC BC Chapter executive, chair of the Kwantlen GDMA Advisory Committee and a past member of the Canada Post Stamp Advisory Committee. He was honoured with GDC Fellowship in 2003 and, since becoming a graphic designer in the early 1980s, has won numerous awards for his work.

An opinionated GDC listserve contributor, Matt is noted for his obsessive use of Cooper Black, as well as an inability to execute an accurate slapshot. He also has an Italian mistress whom he keeps locked up in the garage and takes out only when the sun is shining on the Sea-to-Sky Highway. His favourite designer is Massimo Tamburini, the creator of his mistress.

Matt became a GDC Professional Member in 1990, served on the GDCBC executive as Communications Chair from 1993-1997, GDCBC President for 2 terms from 1997-2000, National VP Communications for 2 terms from 1998-2002 and 2008-2014, National President from 2002-2004 and has been serving as GDCBC Ethics Chair since 2011. He has chaired numerous Graphex Awards and most recently co-chaired Icograda Design Week 2010/Design Week Vancouver.
