Matt Pugh

Software Engineer, Systems Researcher, and Teaching Assistant in Edinburgh, United Kingdom

I'm quite into computers, I've done a fair bit of software engineering in the past, and have since focused on academia to collect as many degrees as possible -- mostly to ensure that my tombstone is comically wide to accommodate them all, as it stands:

Matt Pugh B.Eng. (Hons) M.Phil. M.Sc.

Nowhere near enough laters, I need to update my memberships of the BCS and ACM to get those guys at the end too. Previous academic focus has been on building computer vision & machine learning systems in processing big video data-sets. The work of one has been published, with the other ongoing with Prof. Robert Fisher on the Fish4Knowledge project.

Right now I'm studying towards a PhD at ICSA in the University of Edinburgh, funded by the CDT in Data Science, working with Prof. Stratis Viglas & Dr. Boris Grot. The topic I'm looking at is how next-generation, non-volatile storage-class memory is going to change grid-level computing. This is an area that's going to affect everyone, and the change was motivated by hitting computation limits in the aforementioned projects. Always happy to discuss this with people, it's more interesting than it sounds. I promise.

I'm interested in finding a really excellent internship for summer '17, send me a message if you have something.

I'd like to think I'm a pretty-OK linguist, je parle français - je l'ai apprendé quand j'ai travaillé dans CERN en Genève, Suisse comme ingénieur (etudiante technique). Hablo español también. Jien nitkellem Malti bħal mogħoż. Rydw i'n gallu siarad cymraeg, ond dim ond tipyn bach. I may have also started Greek, but δεν (όχι;) ειναι καλο.

The long hair is a throwback to when I wanted to be a rock guitarist. The passion and skill are there, I was just born about 30 years too late for that boat. Nevermind. Computers are great.

There seems to be an abundance of people with my name, I don't really know what my parents were thinking. Contrary to popular belief, and Google search results, I do not make furniture, sculptures, offer interior design nor do I steal websites from people in 1996. These are my doppelgängers (we actually have a semi-secret facebook group for all those with our name, there really are way too many of us).

I hope this has cleared things up, and that I will hear from you soon -- whoever you are. If you're thinking about offering me a job, you should - I would if I were you.
