Matthew Bissell

The value of that education showed most clearly in Matthew Bissell's social support work. From October 2023 to December 2024, he was a Water-Based Rehousing Stabilization Specialist with Episcopal Community Services in San Francisco. Each week he made two visits to clients living on Richardson Bay, bringing supplies and guidance and advocating for their needs.

Much of that job came down to building trust with people who had good reason to be cautious. Matthew listened to what clients told him, helped them communicate with local authorities, and used conflict resolution techniques when situations grew tense. The aim was steady support through structured transitions toward stable housing.

Beginning in December 2024, he carried similar skills into In Home Support Services in Oakland as an In-Home Support Specialist. There he helped clients with meal preparation, exercise routines, and medication management, and he kept family members in regular contact so care stayed coordinated.

In July 2025, Matthew Bissell joined The Broker Group in Richmond, California, as a Financial Consultant. Decisions about life insurance and retirement planning are rarely only about numbers. They involve a client's worries about family, expectations for the future, and comfort with risk. Matthew's work starts with a careful assessment of those needs, moves to options that suit each client, and continues through regular check-ins as circumstances shift.

Long before he worked in social services or finance, Matthew Bissell learned to read people in customer-facing jobs. He worked in apparel sales, as a waiter, as a travel agent, and as a delivery driver for FedEx and UPS. He also worked as a gardener and landscaper, a truck driver trainer, a caregiver, and a social worker. Every one of those roles involved dealing with people under some kind of time pressure, and each sharpened his ability to stay calm and find a practical solution.

Matthew is the father of a son and a daughter, and raising them is the accomplishment he values most. He has been involved in their activities as head parent for their clubs. He grew up in Oakland as the son of Peter Bissell, a longtime Bay Area longshoreman and ILWU member, and Nancy Bissell, who owned a local clothing store, and he has one sister. A lifelong sports fan, he follows baseball, basketball, and football, plays fantasy sports, and collects memorabilia. His volunteer work has included Goodwill, the Salvation Army, and Pitzer College.

From psychology studies in Claremont to Richardson Bay and client homes in Oakland, Matthew Bissell has built his career on paying attention to what people need. He brings that same attention to his clients at The Broker Group as they plan for protection and retirement.
