Matthew White
Music Teacher and Professional Musician in United Kingdom
With roots in both conservatoire training and grassroots education, I currently serve as Head of Music at a South Devon secondary school and sixth form college. My Royal Academy of Music background, combined with extensive performance and composition experience, informs my commitment to accessible, ambitious music-making for all students.
Leading a thriving department which now delivers at least 12 days of sold-out public performances annually, I have designed and implemented a research-led curriculum from KS3 to KS5, underpinned by principles of challenge, accessibility, and equitable support.
Previously, I taught across both primary and secondary phases, delivering the Music in Secondary Schools Trust programme, which provides free instruments and tuition to all KS3 pupils in disadvantaged areas. I regularly led creative workshops for up to 60 students while developing partnerships with local music education providers.
An alumnus of the Royal Academy of Music where I studied composition with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Oliver Knussen, I specialise in orchestral and choral composition, as well as musical theatre arrangements. My music has been performed on stages across the UK from London to Edinburgh, and encompasses music for stage, screen, and concert hall. I was awarded an Associate of the London College of Music at age 16, beginning a lifelong journey of musical achievement and education.
As a performer, I work professionally as a drummer and percussionist, with appearances at the Royal Albert Hall and Royal Festival Hall alongside ensembles including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Armonico Consort.
