Matthew Weaver
Brain Coach in The USA
What’s up, I’m Matthew.
As a memory athlete, I’m often met with looks of shock after I recall the exact order of a pack of playing cards or some random 300 digit number.
And I’m met with even more disbelief when I tell people that they can learn how to do it too.
For starters, I used to NOT be able to do this kind of thing.
Six years ago, information chaos wrecked my mind.
I moved to China and taught ELA and music classes without any prior teaching experience. Before I moved, I was excited because it made me feel alive, but after I got there, it dawned on me that I wasn’t prepared. Information overload nearly dragged me to the grave.
As a first time teacher without experience teaching, I had to develop new skills fast, but I didn’t know how to deal with all the information.
Fortunately, while I wrestled with insomnia one night and browsed YouTube, I discovered a video by Joshua Foer about some powerful memory techniques that helped him win the USA world memory championship even though he had an average memory prior to this.
It then occurred to me that the reason why I was struggling with overwhelm so much was because I had no system inside of my mind to deal with the chaos.
So, I started learning how to learn, and I studied learning methods that reflect how the brain naturally works. It didn’t radically change my brain overnight, but with continued use and practice, it liberated me from information overload, gave me a way achieve more with my time, and helped me remember far more than I ever dreamed possible.
Most importantly, learning how to learn has changed my views about the nature of the mind in general.
Learning shouldn’t be linear or black and white as most schools encourage with their BS rules. Fundamentally, education should develop our capacity to be creative, form new connections between things, and advance ourselves as a species.
Without using the right methods, it's kind of like trying to swim against a strong moving current, you will exhaust yourself. Instead we must go with the flow and use methods that reflect how the brain really works.
