Matthew E. Murray

Lead Learner and Director of Technology in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

My name is Matthew E. Murray, and I am a committed lifelong learner. I am consumed by a love of creating. I have a fervent love of school, educational technology, e-publications of all shapes and sizes, cross-curricular integration, anything programmed (robots, drones, IoT), and my hometown of Philadelphia. I am a maker of many hats; I am a Google Certified Trainer & L2 Educator, Apple Teacher, Edcamp Organizer, Osmo & Kodable Ambassador, First Lego League Administrator/Coach, Girl Engineers Club Founder, and Girls Who Code Club Facilitator.

As an educational technologist who believes in the why behind #edtech, I am energized rather than exhausted by our rapidly evolving world. Due to the rise of asynchronous, self-paced, self-guided, distance, and blended learning opportunities, I think that there is no better time in human history to be a teacher or a learner.

This is my tenth year in education having first found my calling as an educator while mentoring children with intellectual differences at Camp S.O.A.R. and concurrently helping peers as a writing tutor at Northwestern University. I have acted as a roving instructor through the Geographic Society of Chicago (GSC), taught middle school in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, tapped as the Head of the High School English Department at Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School (PPACS), taken the reins as the first technology integrator at The Philadelphia School (TPS) and its newest Director of Technology.

At The Philadelphia School, I am jumpstarting a robotics program (through LEGO's First Lego League [FLL]), bringing computational and design thinking into primary-aged classrooms through coding, and leading diversity initiatives that promote a more expansive female presence in tech (through Girl Engineers Club, TechGirlz partnerships, and Girls Who Code).

I have presented on the beauty of app smashing, the possibilities of paperless schools, "bleeding edge" educational technology implementation, iTunes U as a "R" in the SAMR model in lieu of textbooks, starting a STEAM mobile classroom, and other topics at ISTE 2015, PETE&C 2015 & 2016, and Edcamp Philly 2014, 2015 and 2017. I also am a proud member of the Edcamp Delaware Valley Independent Schools (DVIS) organization team.

I've had the invaluable opportunity to create 3 different iTunes U Courses, produce original content inspired by the Common Core Curriculum through the PA Learns Initiative, and authored two "mini" iBooks. Let's connect!
