While only 19 years old, Matthew Hartnett was thrust into the professional ranks. Ever since he has captured the hearts and attention of musicians and audiences across America. From the stage, to his career as an educator, Matthew has influenced everyone in his path both musically and personally.

A Lake Charles, Louisiana son raised in Houston, Texas he choose trombone is 6th grade after signing up for clarinet and realizing only girls were in that class at his intermediate school. After that, he has won competition after competition in the classical solo and ensemble and chair placements district region and state bands. Upon completion of high school at Dwight D. Eisenhower in Houston, Texas, Matthew decided to attend the historical Texas Southern University.

It was at Texas Southern University where Matthew was introduced to Jazz by professor Dr. Howard Harris. It didn't take long for Matthew to not only learn the language of this art form but also leave his classical studies behind him and pursue a degree in Jazz Performance. Standing on the shoulders of giants that had studied in the same room he rehearsed in daily at TSU such as: Horace Alexander Young, Kirk Whalum, Joe Sample, Wayne Henderson, The Jazz Crusaders, Barry Lee Hall, Frank Lacy, Andre Hayward and so many more, Matthew felt a since of destiny.
