Matt is a distinguished servant leader with extensive local, state, national and international service. He is an outstanding steward of strategy and staff, translating vision into operational reality at scale. He has held executive strategy and operational positions in non-profit, private, public and corporate philanthropy. He is recognized in public education, youth development and career pathway grantmaking, engaging and mobilising families, employees & communities, leading organisations, building alliances and ‘earning’ movements.
For more than thirty-years, Matt has been leading philanthropy, advocacy & activist organizations, informing policy, building alliances and earning movements in the cause of a more informed, just and compassionate world. His service has taken him to 4 continents and over twenty countries, supporting IGOs, government agencies, NGOs, communities and families.
The last decade has been committed to U.S. based efforts, working with philanthropists as they defined their social justice legacies and actualized transformative grantmaking and programming. Known as a trust & bridge builder, generative thinker & strategy savant, he is an outstanding steward of mission, resources and relationships -- translating vision into operational reality at scale. Currently, he provides boutique advisory in the fields of private philanthropy, corporate citizenship, employee, community engagement & mobilisation. His clients include Galaxy Magnesium, PBS Hawai'i, Hawaii FiDO, Kamehameha Schools Bishop Estates, Hawaii Electric Company.
Matt served for about 2 years, first as Lead Consultant for Youth Engagement and subsequently as inaugural President of XQ Institute, the première education initiative of Emerson Collective, where he oversaw the largest open call for public high school innovation in American history, accompanied by a $120MM national grant portfolio and civic engagement campaign. Leading up to his service with Emerson, Matt was inaugural Executive Director of The Learning Coalition, the first private Hawaii-based charity focusing on community engagement and public private partnership as key levers to sustainable, public education systems change. Prior to TLC, he served as Education Program Officer for the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation, overseeing a statewide grantmaking strategy of community, school and district-level leadership development as change levers.
