The recipient of a bachelor's degree in political science from UCLA and juris doctor from the University of the Pacific, Matthew "Matt" Zumstein began his career as deputy city attorney at the San Diego City Attorney's Office. Responsible for fraudulent activity over his one year at the office, he went on to assume a similar position at the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office. His more than five-year tenure there saw Matthew Zumstein prepare close to 500 cases for trial and, as first chair, try in excess of 35 felonies and misdemeanors to verdict.

Matthew Zumstein later joined the San Francisco-based firm of Gordon & Rees. Serving as a litigation associate, he focused on product liability litigation. He subsequently assumed responsibilities as a partner, first with Ropers Majeski Kohn & Bentley and then with Smith, Currie & Hancock. Over this time, he built additional experience in product liability while broadening his legal aptitudes to include construction law, corporate formation and dissolution, and breach of contract.

Since December 2019, Matt Zumstein has served as staff counsel with Zurich North America. Working from Sacramento, California, he focuses on property and casualty insurance defense with particular expertise in construction law. Complementing more than two decades of legal experience, he is a member of the US Supreme Court Bar and the Northern California Association of Defense Counsel.
