In the face of the overwhelming challenges confronting the world, I ask all who live in privilege not to succumb to indifference and hopelessness. Though very few of us have any real power to secure relief and safety for our fellow human beings in need, I believe we are obligated to do more than pursue our own personal desires in the light of the grim reality we live in. It is not my will to put the weight of the world on any one person’s shoulders, and I make no demand for people to rise up in a revolution to accomplish change. Instead I ask you to contribute to social progress with a genuine concern for the world and a willingness to contemplate new global ways of thinking. There are real reasons to try to think differently. The overwhelming majority of the world’s challenges are unintended consequence of our culture, which fails to apply knowledge and experience in the understanding of what is necessary for life to flourish on our planet. There is no reason to think social progress cannot make the leap to match technological progress, it is only waiting for us to realize our direct and all-encompassing relationship with the physical environment and each other.
