To be able to function in a normal and healthy way people sleep. Sleep is a dynamic process where the mind is very effective. Huge numbers of people inside the United States suffer from chronic long-term sleep disorders annually. This does not include yet those other huge numbers of people who are experiencing occasional insomnia issues.

There are more than 70 different sleep problems that are generally classified into one of three categories:

Sleep problems, when properly diagnosed, could be easily maintained. The most common sleep disorder is insomnia which occurs more often in women and in seniors. People with sleep disorders can take over-the-counter sleep aid drugs, that are most reliable for an occasional sleepless night.

Age is really a significant element in determining the total amount of rest that the person must function normally. Infants, for example, rest most of the day for about 1-6 hours while teenagers often need about 9 hours a day. People need on average 7 to 8 hours of sleep a day. But, seniors will often have shorter intervals of sleep and spend less time in deep stages of sleep. Though it isn't clear whether this can be a normal part of aging or a consequence of medications that the elderly commonly use, about 50-years of people over the age of 65 involve some type of sleep problem.

The ability to rest and to get up are affected by various chemical changes in the brain and in the body. There are particular foods and medicines that alter the balance of these chemicals which also affect how well we sleep. Examples of these are caffeine which can cause sleeplessness, and antidepressants which can cause a lack of REM or Rapid Eye Movement in sleep. Also, alcohol and smoking may significantly contribute in a lack of deep sleep. Both deep and REM sleep are crucial elements of the standard sleep cycle.

Prevent mixing alcohol and sleep help drugs. Alcohol may raise the sedative effects of the pills even in bit, producing vertigo, distress, or fainting. Alcohol in itself can already cause insomnia.
