Matt Swenson serves as Director of CEO Communications for Cargill — a global food and agriculture company whose purpose is to nourish the world in a safe, responsible, and sustainable way.
Before joining Cargill, Matt served as Deputy Chief of Staff and Director of Communications for Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton and Lt. Governor Tina Smith, and as Press Secretary for United States Trade Representative Michael Froman in the Executive Office of the President of the United States during the Obama Administration.
Matt also previously served as Director of Communications for the Minnesota Department of Commerce, as a Communications Adviser for the Minnesota House of Representatives, and as an Adjunct College Professor at Concordia University in Saint Paul.
Throughout his career, Matt has helped deliver better, faster assistance to Minnesotans in times of crisis, including: helping establish a special compensation fund for victims of the I-35W Bridge collapse; helping pass one of the largest disaster relief packages in state history after severe flooding in southeastern Minnesota; and providing insurance education and assistance for storm victims statewide.
Matt has volunteered as a reading tutor, mentored college and graduate students, served on his local watershed commission, served on the Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs Alumni Board of Directors and the Gustavus Adolphus College Alumni Board of Directors, and led an effort to help victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Matt earned a B.A. in communication studies and political science from Gustavus Adolphus College, with a minor in art studio. He also earned an M.P.P. with concentrations in communications strategy and social policy from the University of Minnesota’s Hubert H. Humphrey School of Public Affairs.
Matt lives in Minneapolis with his wife Sara and their daughter.
