Mavindu Muthoka
scientist, Researcher, and Father in Kisumu
I am Mavindu Muthoka, a dynamic scientist in sustainable aquaculture and aquatic food systems, driven by a passion for research, innovation, and transformative impact in Sub-Saharan Africa. With a solid foundation in aquatic sciences and an ongoing PhD in Fisheries and Aquaculture at Maseno University, I bring a unique blend of academic rigor, field-based experience, and cross-sector collaboration to address some of the most pressing challenges in food security, climate resilience, and blue economy development.
My work is at the nexus of science, policy, and practice. I have contributed to and led multiple interdisciplinary projects focused on Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA), circular bio-economies, Black Soldier Fly (BSF) innovations, and nutrition-sensitive fish farming. I have worked with institutions such as WorldFish, EU Horizon Europe, WIOMSA, and the World Bank to co-design and implement solutions that bridge research and real-world outcomes—from enhancing fish feed systems and improving livelihoods to influencing agroecological policy landscapes.
As a published scholar with over 19 peer-reviewed papers, I’ve built a strong scientific track record across areas such as low-emission aquaculture pathways, regenerative aquaculture, climate-smart technologies, and value chain transformation. Beyond research, I am a skilled facilitator, educator, and stakeholder engagement specialist with experience lecturing in university programs and training grassroots farmers across East Africa.
I thrive in interdisciplinary and multicultural environments, applying both qualitative and quantitative tools (SPSS, R, GIS) to generate actionable insights. I am deeply committed to translating research into impact—whether through scientific communication, capacity building, or influencing development programming.
Above all, I am driven by a vision: to shape resilient, inclusive, and sustainable aquatic food systems that uplift communities and safeguard ecosystems. If you're looking for a dedicated aquaculture scientist who combines systems thinking with practical solutions and collaborative leadership, I’m eager to connect.
