Mavis Vermaak is a Cape Town-based writer, musician and visual artist. In 2008 her self-titled, five-track debut EP, produced by Juan Penguin was released to critical acclaim.
Over the course of 2010 and 2011, again teaming up with producer Juan Penguin, Mavis completed her first full-length album – a collection of compositions of Afrikaans translations of works by the 13th century mystic poet Rumi.

“The enigmatic Mavis Vermaak is a voice that calls in the desert, sighs in the forest. Her vulnerable voice touches the small hairs in your neck. She talks, chants, sings against a background of sounds which sometimes remind of the elements, of the wind drumming against a window, the rustling of autumn leaves and the thundering of the tides. But what it really sounds like is the ocean inside you: dark blood coursing in your ears, a restless heart pounding against your sternum.” - Deborah Steinmair
