Hi Guys, I am Maya; a twenty year old college junior,a pisces, a daughter, a sister, and a friend. I was raised in South Carolina by my father. Being the fourth of seven children, I naturally value family! I am a self proclaimed foodie, and I find peace in coming of age novels.
I am currently studying Mass Communication at North Carolina Central University. While I have always had a passion for media, it was in middle school when I decided I wanted to see more brown faces on televison. I knew I was absoulutely capable of implementing such a change... so here I am!
I am extremely passionate about the portrayal of black women in the entertainment industry. I am hopeful that NCCU introduces a Public Relations program before I graduate so that I can fulfill my dream of opening my own firm someday. I feel the majority of us have conformed to the western ideas of beauty, "the American dream", what they consider is couth, and what is not, so much so, that we hardly question our place in what is considered to be the greatest country on earth.
Hopefully, opening my own firm will not only be a way to provide jobs in the black community but, will also aid in portraying black women (and men for that matter) in a more positive light.
I read a quote once by a woman by the name of Rita Mae Brown that said, “I think the reward for conformity is that everyone likes you except yourself.” I try to keep this thought in the front of my mind always and use it as a mantra while living my life.
Nice meeting you guys! :)
