We are all in the business of doing something better, and ‘better’ usually requires change. I have demonstrated the ability to plan and deliver change across multiple industries (from agriculture to finance) within projects of various sizes (from competitor analysis to international supply chain improvements) and complexities (from mentoring to mergers and acquisitions).

For me, there are four important characteristics of delivering change:

  1. Understand the bigger picture. That is starting with the ‘why’ to provide a clear understanding of the drivers for change, and then defining the future state including the benefits of transition. I am a fan of Investment Logic Mapping as it is a collaborative, fast, and effective approach to understanding the context for change.
  2. Pragmatic open mindedness. Creating strategy requires the consideration of alternatives that extend current thinking and practices. This thinking and analysis must be rigorous, real, and quick. The business model generator and the lean canvas are great examples of processes to help with pragmatic open mindedness. I have successfully used these processes in startup and business as usual environments.
  3. Commitment to the cause (not the plan). The benefit of planning is the process and not necessarily the plan itself. While agile frameworks are useful in this regard, I have seen too many people get lost in these frameworks - implementing agile principles is a much easier ask for project teams and organisations.
  4. Continuous enquiry. It is important for organisations to keep current with customer, industry, and regulatory changes. Keeping current is more than knowing what is happening but also interpreting this to form insight for informed and effective decision-making. I am head down in this aspect of change every day in my role as a Strategy and Web Analyst.
