Africa and international security specialist who has worked across private, nonprofit and United Nations sectors advising organizations how to manage policy and risk amid political upheaval, terrorism, and conflict. A recognized Africa expert, Michael has been featured on Al Jazeera, Wall Street Journal Live, CCTV,and Voice of Americaradio, and quoted in Bloomberg, TheStreet, VOA News, International Travel Journal,and China Cooperative; his writings have been published by The Hill,Center for Humanitarian Cooperation, and United Nations. A member of the State Department's Africa Regional Council, he also presented at the Department's 2015 and 2016 Africa Regional Security Conferences.
Michael formerly worked for the United Nations in several countries while based in Bangkok, producing trainings and publications in educational development. In Indonesia, he coordinated UN recovery efforts to the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami and Aceh insurgency; his work was presented at the US Army War College conference, Civilian-Military Association in Disaster Risk Reduction. Michael holds a Master’s degree from Columbia University, where he concentrated in geopolitical risk, and received his Bachelor’s from Vassar College.
