The first job I ever had was as a lifeguard at a Jewish community center, even though I'm not Jewish. To be able to work there, I first had to become certified as a lifeguard. One of the requirements was to swim 300 meters, and I found out very early into “swimming” those 300 meters that I barely knew how to swim. Nevertheless, I persevered and finished the 300 meters with a stomach full of water and a sheet of paper that said I was a lifeguard. Don’t worry, I quickly became better at swimming. When my first day of work came around, I expected it to be like Baywatch, with me, “being the very heroic person I am”, diving off the lifeguard stand to save a helpless child drowning. The mayor of Augusta would then greet me and give me a key to the city, but no. All I did was save a frog from drowning. Although I never was acknowledged for my heroicness, that job gave me great memories and even greater paychecks. I am totally joking lol. At my job, most of the day we would lifeguard and play with the day campers while they swam. One of the day campers was a, to say it nicely, problematic four-year-old. I have decided not to disclose her name to protect her identity, also I can't remember her name, but we’ll go with the first excuse. One day, when I was in the pool with the campers, she swam up to me and tried to kiss me, so I, not wanting to end up in jail, pushed her away and told her “no”. After doing this, she whispered, “Don’t say no, I just want to love you.” So yeah, she was an interesting kid. It was an amazing job that I am never going to forget about, mainly because I will probably develop skin cancer when I’m older, as I never wore sunscreen.
