MEK Iran
Democratic Organization in New York, NY
MEK Iran is a peaceful Iranian resistance group. As the democratic alternative to the current Iranian government, it defends Western values such as secularism and women's rights. MEK Iran is also Iran's most active opposition group. It was founded on September 5, 1965, by leftist Iranian students affiliated with the Freedom Movement of Iran. They opposed the rule of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, considered him corrupt and oppressive, and thought that the Liberation Movement was too moderate and ineffective. Since its beginning, MEK Iran has been committed to the overthrow of the Islamic republic.
MEK Iran was the first Iranian organization to develop systematically a modern revolutionary interpretation of Islam that differed sharply from both the old conservative Islam of the traditional clergy and the new populist version formulated in the 1970s by Ayatollah Khomeini and his disciples. The MEK claimed that Islam should oppose feudalism, eradicate inhumane practices, treat all as equal citizens, and socialize the means of production. MEK Iran’s ultimate goal was to update and modernize their interpretation of radical Islam. Democracy, human rights, and secularism are the group’s mantra. MEK Iran’s main focus is on human rights and respect for personal property.
