Melvin Sharty
Project Officer and Social Change Maker in Freetown, Sierra Leone
Hello, I’m Melvin. I’m a Project Officer and a Social Change Maker. My passion is to see a Sierra Leone where all men and boys are loving and respectful and all women and girls are valued and safe. In 2017, I was selected as one of the 97 best and brightest young people by IREX's Community Solutions Program on the thematic area of women and gender issues. In the same year, i was awarded the Presidential Precinct Fellowship and attended the Global Leadership Forum (GLF2017) at the University of Virginia, USA. My interactions and contributions on those platforms have shaped my world view and vision; meeting different people, culture, traditions and building a network of like-minded leaders who are inspired to creating lasting change in their communities. This shared vision has made me who i am now! I am proud to be called a community solutions fellow and with my #10 Solutions Project, i am working to inspire men and boys, women and girls to put an end to domestic violence. I believe that ending violence would talk a collective effort from every member of the society. My #10 Solutions Project has trained and educated about 50 school girls on how to keep themselves safe and violence free. I have conducted workshop for 5 female volunteers at my organization on "Understanding Domestic Violence". I am now a member of United Network of Young Peace Builders (UNOY) working as a Local Consultant for a 13 month project " Understanding Youth-Led Civic Engagement in Peace building" based in Sierra Leone.
Therefore, it would take the efforts, resources and knowledge of all of us to making the world a better place.
