When businesspersons in Memphis came together to form the Memphis Business Boosters, an association that promotes business in the city, they had no idea their influence would spread beyond promoting business activities to highlight some of Memphis’ top attractions. Sun Studio
Originally started as Memphis Recording Service, the studio shared a building with the record label Sun Records, where the first rock-and-roll single was recorded. The self-proclaimed birthplace of rock-and-roll also recorded for some Blues and R&B artists in the 1950’s, including Junior Parker, Rufus Thomas, B. B. King, Rosco Gordon, and Howlin’ Wolf, and Little Milton. Towards the end of the 1950s, country music and rock-and-roll artists like Elvis Presley, Charlie Feathers, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Warren Smith, and Ray Harris, also recorded here. It later moved to a new facility after outgrowing its location in Union Avenue.
The studio has gained worldwide recognition as the best producer of rock’roll. Musical legends of the 50s have played a significant role in bringing Sun Studio to the limelight. Many new upcoming artists are excited about standing in the same spot that great musicians like Elvis first recorded their hit songs.
When you tour the studio, a guide will help you to explore the inside story of legendary artists who were attracted to the new, vibrant Sun Sound.
