J. Meryl Krieger

Bloomington, Indiana

Meryl received her Ph.D. in Folklore and Ethnomusicology at Indiana University in 2009. She holds Masters degrees in Anthropology (University of Illinois - Chicago) and Music Theory (Indiana University Jacobs School of Music), as well as Bachelors degrees in Communication Studies (Northwestern University, B.S. Speech) and Piano Performance and Pedagogy (Roosevelt University College of Performing Arts). Her dissertation, "Rough to the Board: Creating Performances in American Recording Studios" was completed under the direction of Dr. Portia Maultsby. Her current research interests include: how media (new and social) technologies affect performers in all creative formats in their communities. She writes about the intersections of music production and technology, remixing and mashups as a way of understanding professional/amateur dynamics, and the role of technology as a mediator of cultural change.
