I am a public policy analyst studying the issues of access to health care and health care disparities.
The term health disparities refers to population-specific differences in the presence of disease and health otucomes.
Americans are seeing some benefits of health care reform. The reform requires health insurance companies, among them WellPoint, to end their most indefensible practice: rescinding coverage after a policyholder, many with breast cancer, gets sick.
The insurers acted after they were whacked by some bad publicity. An investigative report by Reuters said that one of the nation’s biggest insurers, WellPoint, was targeting women with breast cancer for rescissions. That policy has continued to present day, according to the Reuters report.
