Mike Futrell
City Manager in South San Francisco, California
Mike Futrell graduated from Baton Rouge High, where he was president of the student body, & then went to Louisiana State University, where he was also president of the student body, graduating with a degree in Business & Public Administration. He attended LSU Law, gaining his JD with honors.
After, he joined the Navy & was assigned as an officer to the submarine USS Grant where he completed three deployments. He then transferred to USS Kentucky, a new Trident class submarine, then, shore duty in DC. He returned to BR to practice law as a reservist.
1996: elected to the BR City Council, where he focused on roads & public works, becoming Chair of the Capital Improvements Committee.
1999: elected to the LA House of Reps where he focused on transportation, education, & local issues. He championed the state’s first prescription-drug-benefit plan to help the elderly afford medication.
2005: left the House of Representatives to become the State Director for a U.S. Senator, running all operations in seven offices across the state. After Hurricane Katrina, Mike focused on helping cities recover from the hurricane.
2006: recalled to active duty in Iraq where he led a team from Baghdad. Mike was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service.
Returning to civilian life, he became the CAO for the City of Baton Rouge. He led the City’s $1.2B sewer improvement program, drove funding for a $47M upgrade to the downtown area & championed bike & pedestrian enhancements to improve quality of life.
2010: again recalled to active duty for a tour of duty. As a Navy Captain (O6) with U.S. Pacific Command in HI, he served as Director of the Commander’s Action Group, writing the U.S.-Asia-Pacific theater strategy. He also led a crisis action team in “Operation Tomodachi” responding to the earthquake-tsunami-nuclear disaster in Japan.
After his service at Pacific Command he was offered an opportunity to serve as the CEO/EVP of an energy company. Hawaii Gas is a subsidiary of Macquarie Infrastructure Company (NYSE:MIC), a producer and distributor of SNG and hydrogen, LPG & LNG on six major islands of HI. He led a workforce of 330 to achieve goals while safely providing energy & outstanding customer service.
2014: he accepted a position as City Manager of South San Francisco, CA. As CEO of the municipality with over 900 employees and an annual operating & capital budget of $135M.
